Buying a student clarinet

While a student clarinet may not have as many technical demands made on it as a professional standard clarinet, a student clarinet player has their own needs in a clarinet. Below are some tips for buying a clarinet for a student player.

The first consideration when buying an instrument for a student is whether to buy a new or used clarinet. Many major manufacturers are now making student level clarinets at reasonable prices, often close in price to used instruments. Some advantages to new clarinets is that you should receive a warranty from the dealer, and you are more likely to find a repairer who can work on your brand of clarinet if something does go wrong. However, you teacher may know of a good used instrument for sale, and it is always worth looking (and playing) before you make your final decision. Whatever your choice, it is always a good idea that whenever possible you get a chance to play the clarinet before you buy it, as different materials, sizes of mouthpiece and other factors can affect how you feel about your clarinet and how it plays.

Once you have bought your new clarinet, there are a few steps students can take to make sure that it stays in a good condition. Much of the damage to clarinets belonging to beginners is due to being dropped or hit. While being careful with your instrument at all times goes a long way to avoiding this, a good case will also help, especially if you have to carry your clarinet to school and band practice. It is also important to learn how to look after your new clarinet – ask your teacher to show you how to care for your clarinet as soon as possible.
