Clarinet Method: how to learn ?
Clarinet method refers to a system of teaching and learning the clarinet. There are different methods for learning the clarinet, some as old as the clarinet itself, others recent additions to the canon of clarinet pedagogy. One clarinet teacher may choose a different method from another, based on different factors such as what they themselves were taught with, what type of clarinet playing their student wants to concentrate on, and what techniques the clarinet student needs to work on.
Many methods for learning the clarinet in the past were written by famous clarinetists. One of the best known is the Baermann method, developed by Carl Baermann (1810-1885) who wrote not only the theory behind the method but also many professional standard compositions in the method book. This method, or variations of it, is still used for teaching the clarinet today. It is a five part method, with the last two sections being particularly difficult. A student who has completed all parts of the Baermann method successfully can count themselves as a highly competent clarinetist.
A more modern method developed for beginners by a famous clarinetist is the Benny Goodman method. Covering the basics of playing the clarinet, from putting your clarinet together to the theory and practice required, this book contains 11 tunes for solo clarinet and a biography of Goodman.
Many modern methods for the clarinet are now written by music educators rather than professional performers. Often a method being taught will be part of an overall system for teaching various instruments, often linked to an ensemble such as a concert band.
