Clarinet Instruction
So you have decided to learn how to play the clarinet – excellent choice. The clarinet is a versatile instrument suited to many different types of music, including jazz, marching band and orchestral. The clarinet repertoire contains some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, and new clarinet music is being written all the time. Now what you need to do is decide upon a form of clarinet instruction that suits you best.
Most students of the clarinet begin learning with a teacher. Many of these students will first learn at school, often as part of a group. Depending on the school music system, this group could be all clarinets, or a mixture of different instruments. This is fine at the very beginning but make sure that you (or your child as the case may be) get some specific clarinet lesson time, and some individual attention on a regular basis.
More advanced learners will want to seek out individual lessons, usually with a specialist teacher, either clarinet only or at least a woodwind specialist. As well as learning how to play your clarinet, you should also be learning elements of music theory so that you are able to read music and participate in ensembles like orchestras or concert bands.
Some people are not in a position where they have access to a clarinet teacher. Thanks to modern technology, it is possible to get instruction on the clarinet from video or DVDs. While this is a good stop-gap measure, it will never replace a teacher, as a video is unable to give you feedback on how you are playing. It is always advised to find a teacher once you have learned the basics of the clarinet.
