Buy a clarinet: things to consider
When you are making the decision to buy a clarinet there is a lot of choices available. But how to you chose which clarinet is for you (or your child?) Whether you are looking to buy a first time student clarinet or upgrade to a better model than your existing clarinet, there are a few points to think through before making your big decision.
If you are new to the clarinet, your first port of call should be your clarinet teacher. Your teacher should be able to give you lots of advice on what clarinets in your local area are suitable for beginners, and will probably be aware of any good 2nd hand clarinets that are currently for sale. Y
our teacher should be able to explain to you the advantages of a wood or plastic instrument, what different brands have to offer, and what is a reasonable price. It is also a good idea to talk to your teacher if you are considering upgrading to a more expensive clarinet, as they should have an idea of what your new and future requirements will be.
Whether you are buying your clarinet new or second-hand, there are some things to look for before you agree to purchase the instrument. What condition is it in – are there any parts of the keywork that look bent?
Are there scratches or dents on the body of the instrument (this not only looks ugly, but can be an indication of further damage inside the clarinet)? Do any parts seem to stick? If you are a beginner, you should have another, more experienced clarinetist play the instrument for you to check that it is alright
