The Artley Clarinet
The Artley clarinet has been the first clarinet for many players for a long time. Best known for their student clarinets, Artley produce a range of clarinets, many of them in the budget price range.
The Artley company was formed in the early 20th century when flute maker Donald D. Artley joined with four family members to start making flutes for a New York music instrument company. In 1953 the company was renamed D. and J. Artley, Inc. and continued to make flutes. Once C.G. Conn became Artley’s exclusive distributor in 1960s, clarinets and double reed instruments were introduced to the range. In 1969, C.G. Conn purchased Artley, though clarinets are still made under the Artley name.
The Artley name is most associated with student level clarinets, and is therefore best known for their B flat versions of the clarinet. The most well known of the clarinets made by Artley is the 17S student model, which is made of composite materials. There is also the Artley 72S which is made with Grenadilla wood, and there are bass versions of the clarinet available, though they are quite rare.
Many players who buy a standard model clarinet that is an Artley will find that they need to make changes as their playing becomes more challenging. Rather than trade their current clarinet in for a completely new one, many students will instead upgrade their clarinet mouthpiece or barrel, which will allow them to keep using their Artley for awhile longer.
